Talisman is committed to minimizing the impact of our operations on the environment. We follow the best global practices of the industry, use leading edge technology and processes, and are continuously reviewing our environmental practices to improve our performance.

Talisman Peru has focused on building cooperative relationships with regulators and implementing a compliance program that is integrated into every aspect of the business. We also work closely with the country’s environmental regulatory agency and take a more active role in sharing our technical expertise and points of view on standards and regulations.

We meet, and in many cases surpass, environmental regulations outlined by the Peruvian government. For example:

• We have a policy of zero discharge during our exploration activities. Treated wastewater (industrial and domestic) is re-injected in disposal wells on site and does not affect surface waters.
• We use double-hulled barges for river transport to minimize the possibility of spills.
• We use synthetic base mud for drilling activities to maximize drilling performance without harming the environment.

Our environmental program also includes:

• Proper storage, treatment and disposal of liquid and solid waste.
• Bunded tanks.
• The use of a geo-membrane to cover the entire well lease site. This measure allows us to protect the soil from possible spills.
• Rigorous spill control policies and procedures.
• Sustainable restoration through natural re-vegetation practices.

Talisman funds an environmental observer program to train local people to effectively monitor our performance. The training is provided by a qualified contractor and gives participants an understanding of industry operations, Peruvian regulations, testing techniques, and water and soil sampling.

Our environmental practices are under constant review to continuously improve performance. This includes using the latest technology and implementing prevention and control programs. We will continue this due diligence as we move into new phases in our Peru operations.
