Since beginning operations in Peru, one of Talisman’s goals has been to improve the education of the indigenous youth in our areas of operations. We believe that better education will improve the lives of community members and their families.
Schools supplies and infrastructure
Talisman has been focused on building schools, providing computers with Internet access, donating desks and school supplies, and supporting libraries. We provide financial support for teacher development programs and training initiatives designed to benefit entire communities, such as carpentry workshops, distribution of fish farms and training for health technicians.
Scholarships
Talisman offers full scholarships to outstanding high school students, allowing them to continue professional studies in areas such as nursing, computer science and music. These scholarships, coordinated with local teaching organizations in the towns of Tarapoto and Iquitos, cover all of the student’s expenses, from registration and uniforms, to room and board and transportation in the cities where the courses are offered. To date, 44 indigenous youths in the Loreto region, from communities settled in Blocks 64, have received scholarships.
Support for students in Iquitos
Talisman has established an agreement with OEPIAP (which is the Spanish acronym for the “Student Organization of the Indigenous Peoples of the Peruvian Amazon”) to support 47 students who are currently pursuing university studies.
Coming from different tribes, these students have moved to Iquitos in the Loreto region to become professionals in areas such as environmental management, anthropology, engineering, nursing, arts and information technology.
The company is also supporting an English not-for-profit organization – the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations – to conduct workshops on leadership and accountability values within this group of students.
